The Mini Projector Selector #3

Hi there, back again. Now that you think you have narrowed down the choice for your new mini projector, you need to consider a couple of the ‘C’s.

Content and Contrast Ratio

We discussed the quality of your content in #2, but you also need to consider what is in the Content that you are showing to your audience.

If you are mainly showing movies, photos or ‘big text’ such as PowerPoint presentations, the Contrast Ratio is not so critical but if you are displaying a lot of text or fine detail such as graphs or say engineering diagrams, selecting a projector with a higher contrast ratio will make a big difference. Also preferable if you are really serious about your Home Cinema or Gaming reproduction.

In simple terms, the Contrast Ratio is the ratio of Black to White on the screen or Viewing Surface, actually the amount of Black bouncing back to you from the Viewing Surface. The more Black that bounces back, the crisper the image or clearer the text.

If you displayed a text document through 2 mini projectors with similar Lumens side by side that had 2000:1 & 10,000:1 CR’s respectively, the text on the 2000:1 would appear a bit greyer and fuzzier than on the mini projector with 10,000:1 CR. It won’t be unreadable by any means and if you didn’t see a comparison, you’d probably never know, but it’s worth considering if you want a higher quality presentation.

Most of the mini LED data projectors up to around 200 Lumens tend to have Contrast Ratios up to 1000:1. From 300 Lumens onwards, many of them are 10,000:1. The Qumi Q7 boasts 800 Lumens and 30,000:1 Contrast Ratio for extremely crisp image quality.

Of course, the quality of the Viewing Surface will influence the quality of your image as well, use of a screen will deliver a higher quality image than a wall but a higher Contrast Ratio will always help.

That’s probably about enough for you to ‘Focus’ on today, but hopefully it’s put you more in the picture.
