Which Projector Screen?

Shopping takes time because of the wide range of choices available to choose from. Like any other product in the market, a projector screen is also available in a variety of sizes and forms. Thankfully, choosing the right projector screen might not be as difficult as choosing the right pair of jeans. If one has the right requirements, buying a projector screen will definitely not take hours.

The Prerequisite
Before buying a projector screen, one must do some research on a few points. It is important to analyse the place of installation of the screen for factors such as provision for mounting a fixed or retractable screen, effect of ambient light, room size and the viewing angle.

1. Fixed or retractable or portable - Fixed or retractable screens can be ideal for places like houses, offices, auditoriums, etc. A fixed screen or a permanent projector screen can be installed as part of indoor equipment like home theatre or at an outdoor location like a stadium. A retractable screen will normally be priced lower than the fixed screen. Depending on the available space and budget a person can choose between fixed or retractable screens. Electric retractable screens are also available in the market. This type of a projector screen is rolled with the help of motors. These electric screens are typically huge in size and hence motors are used to pull them up or down. A portable projector screen on the other hand can be used outdoors, especially at places where it is not possible to install a fixed screen. A person might carry a mini projector or a pocket projector with a portable projector screen. Portable projector screens are normally the most inexpensive.

2. Viewing angle and gain - The location at which the screen will be used should be analysed to understand the range of viewing angle for which the projection must be clearly visible. The screen gain refers to the reflectivity of light from the screen. White screens normally have a gain in the range of 1.2 to 2.5.  The higher the gain, the better the reflection. However, a higher gain can be a problem because the high reflection can cause bright hot spots on the screen.

3. Dimensions and ambient light - If a projector is to be installed in a dark room, the projector screen can be bought cheaper. In a dark room grey projector screens with gain greater than 0.8 can be a good option. Either a fixed or retractable projector screen can be installed here. If the room is bright, then the screen needs to be of better quality with a good screen gain. A projector screen with lesser gain may not display the projection in bright colors due to the ambient light. However, a good screen coupled with a good projector can solve this problem. A projector screen can be bought in varying dimensions. From the smaller home theatre screens that measure 92 inches diagonally to the giant screens of an auditorium that can measure in tens of meters, choosing the correct dimension depends on the need.

A Screen On the Move
Installation of fixed projectors and projector screens requires a good amount of money to be spent. If a projector needs to be used in multiple rooms then the most cost effective solution could be the use of portable projectors and a portable projector screen. Similarly, these mobile screens and projectors can also be used to deliver presentations at any location with or without a power supply because portable projectors have a rechargeable battery and they can also run on AC power. These mobile projectors can easily fit into your palm or even your pocket. The portable screens require less storage space as they can be easily rolled and fitted into a carrying case. Together, the portable screen and projector provide a perfect solution to the problems of space, budget and venue.

Shopping for the Screen
After researching the requirements, fix a budget and get some quotes for the desired screen. A projector screen can also be purchased online. Choose a screen that fits your need and budget. If you need to use the screen at multiple locations, opt for a portable screen. Finally, ensure that you install the projector screen at the right angle to avoid any glares, hot spots, etc.
