Choosing the Right Projector

The Mini Projector Selector #2

Hi and welcome back to the Projection Selection Panel. If you’ve read the Introduction, you are probably well on your way to deciding which projector you need. Or you are still confused.

The best starting point is your anticipated Audience Size.

If you’re just using your mini projector to show photos or videos or small presentations to a few people, say up to 5, then you probably don’t need much more than 35-50 Lumens. Personally I don’t recommend less than 35 Lumens especially if you’re in bright light conditions.

Here’s a rough guide:

1-5 peeps: 35-50 Lumens

Up to 10: 50-100 Lumens

Up to 20: 100-200 Lumens

20-40: 300-500 Lumens

40+: 500 plus Lumens

Of course, these are all estimations and subject to potential variation depending on a number of factors, such as:

Ambient Light - the darker your conditions, the brighter and clearer will be your image, even 35 Lumens can look pretty good in cinema quality darkness.

Image Size - determined by the distance you have your projector from the viewing surface. The further away, the bigger the image but you will notice some light dissipation as you move further away. Imagine walking away from a wall that you are hosing down, the further away you move, the less water hits the wall.

Content Quality - you get what you deliver to your mini projector, your mini projector won’t make your content quality better but it will make it bigger and easier to view.

Viewing Surface - portability is all about doing it “on the fly” so you don’t need to cart a projection screen around with you. A matt white or pale wall will be more than adequate in most cases. You’ll be surprised how some coloured walls still perform well but a piece of white cardboard or paper is a great backup. Steer clear of glossy surfaces such as whiteboards as they reflect the light source back “in yo’ face”. If you want to ensure a crisp presentation every time, then a portable screen is a great option but you’ll be OK without it in most cases.

That’s enough illumination for today, stay focused and look out for The Mini Projector Selector - #3
